Dear Friend,
English speakers have been coming to live in Spain for years to enjoy the laid back lifestyle, fascinating culture, and incredible weather. They've supported themselves by teaching English while they traveled Europe and made the most of their overseas experience.
However, those that didn't hold EU passports could never get visas to teach English so they were forced to work illegally. In the past, the Spanish Government never made much of a fuss but there were always a few nerves when you had to go through customs.
But these days it's becoming increasingly difficult to work illegally as English academies have become more cautious in whom they hire. They now try to employ only European Union residents (or visa holders) to fill the demand. So while there is still a large demand, both English teachers and English learners have been out of luck.
Which is why you're reading this now. We're going to show you how to obtain a visa to work in Spain quite happily (and legally)... even with the Spanish government's blessing.
Now you can easily obtain a Visa
and live legally in Spain
We now have the solution to your problem. Having operated in the English teaching market in Spain for over 5 years, we needed to find a way to get non-EU passport holders to teach English in Madrid. Students studying English need the mix of accents and many students request, in particular, American English teachers.
So we, TtMadrid – the fantastic and wonderful Teaching English as a Foreign Language training course provider, along with AIL Madrid – the equally fabulous Spanish language school – have a solution just for you.
Introducing the
Spanish Adventure Visa Programme
Allow me to explain how you can work and live in Spain legally for an entire year...
The Spanish government issues student visas to people enrolled in institutions accredited by the Spanish authorities. AIL Madrid is a Spanish language school entitled to request visas for its students. Hence, by enrolling with AIL who in turn collaborate with TtMadrid, you can receive a student visa for an entire year.
Yes, it is a student visa and not a working visa... but here's the good news. As a student you are then able to apply for permission to work to cover your living costs. With this permission, you can then work up to 20 hours per week during term time.
20 hours is considered full time when you're teaching English as you will usually be required to travel between classes. Some will be in student's houses while others will be in companies. Hence, the pay is increased respectively and you can live very comfortably working just 20 teaching hours per week.
Plus, if you need a little extra work we can always help you find private classes on the side. It's completely up to you.
So how do you make this happen?
The Spanish Adventure Visa Programme lasts a year. You simply come to Spain to learn Spanish and teach English for that time. By enrolling in the programme, we are able to grant you a visa to live and work in Spain. This programme has been specially created to abide by the Spanish Government's requirements and obtain your visa.
Our programme requirements include:
- An intensive 4 week Spanish language course with AIL
- An intensive 4 week TEFL course with TtMadrid
- The AIL Spanish Culture Programme
- Ongoing professional development and help
1. Intensive Spanish Course
You'll need to complete a 4 week intensive Spanish language course with AIL. This is obviously a great start to living in Spain since you'll probably want to learn the language anyway.
Plus, we think an intensive language course is the fastest and easiest way to pick up Spanish. It's much easier to do one intensive course when you arrive than doing a few hours here and there during the week. AIL also have courses for all levels so it doesn't matter if you can't even say hello (hola) or you've been studying Spanish for years.
2. Intensive English Teaching (TEFL) Course
To prepare you to teach English, you also do a 4 week intensive course with TtMadrid. We're an accredited Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course that you can use to secure English teaching work around the world. Not only do we have graduates working in Spain, but also Poland, England, Australia, USA, Lithuania, France, Germany, Brazil, Peru, Ghana, and many other countries.
Our course will prepare you to walk into your first class with confidence (and we'll help you obtain those classes) even if you don't know the difference between a verb and an adjective right now. Most of our graduates come with no prior knowledge of teaching English and leave fully competent teachers. In fact, our graduates are the most sought after in Madrid by the English academies and are always quickly offered more than enough work to fill their schedules.
You can do the two intensive courses in any order. You can even do your TEFL course now, start working, and then do your Spanish course over the summer when English classes are traditionally harder to find (the Spanish like their holidays). All you need is your TEFL and you'll be ready to live and work in Spain with the rest of our graduates enjoying the Spanish life. There's a reason many of us don't want to leave!
3. The AIL Spanish Culture Programme
You will also have access to the Spanish Culture Programme which will enhance your understanding of the people, culture, history and language of Spain.
4. Ongoing Professional Development
You're also required to do ongoing professional development to further enhance your English teaching skills. This consists of lesson planning guidance at TtMadrid and attending workshops to update and increase your skills.
These will be held at TtMadrid and a wide range of other agencies, schools and academies who have agreed to participate in this programme. They have agreed to participate because they really want to employ a vast range of teachers from around the world – not just EU citizens – and they're as excited about this programme as we are. For you it's an opportunity to increase your knowledge of business English, phonetics, games, blended learning and grow your network of contacts.
It's important to realize that just doing a 4 week course with a registered institution will not entitle you to a visa. You need to be enrolled in the programme for an entire year or your visa application won't be accepted.
Also remember that you have to apply for your visa in your own country. Any school that says you can sort it out when you arrive is giving your false information (and yes, people have been tricked in the past).
But wait, there's more!
Sorry, no steak knives... but we do have some other great stuff for you.
Many people worry about making friends in a new country (well they do until they arrive) and that's why we have the Spanish Culture Programme provided by AIL. In no time you'll be enjoying intercambio evenings, cinema, dance classes, museum visits and much, much more. Plus, you'll become a lifetime member of TtRed – our social network in Madrid – where there are plenty past graduates to hang out with (and give your Spanish practice a rest).
We also find graduates who do our intensive courses together form a bond for life. It's amazing how people from all walks of life come together to form strong friendships that can only be experienced by living in a foreign country. From the day you start your course you'll have an instant network of friends.
On the professional side, once you've got your TEFL qualification we don't just leave you high and dry either. We actually arrange for our favorite English teaching academies to come and interview you for jobs. This saves you traipsing from place to place trying to find work. I fact, many of our graduates leave the Interview Day with a full teaching schedule already.
We also have weekly lesson planning sessions, ongoing professional development, and you're always welcome to come by to use our teaching resources or just for a chat. When you're abroad it's not uncommon to feel homesick at times. But with AIL and TtMadrid you instantly get adopted into two families.
We're here to look after you and make sure your time is Spain is as great as it should be and to make the move as easy as possible. We'll help you find accommodation, set up a bank account, and get a mobile phone. We cover all the tricky things so if you're not confident with the language yet you can still hit the ground running.
So how much does this all cost?
Not as much as you imagine, we assure you. Remember the programme includes:
